Why So Long?

Well, I have had several people ask me, why can't you just go tomorrow and pick up Dylan. Believe me, I wish I could. I thought I would put down the steps that will be occurring over the next few months.

1. Our Dossier and Acceptance Papers are sent to the Agency staff at Ho Chi Minn City. (The dossier is all those docs we put together a few months ago, police records, doctor letters, etc. The acceptance papers are all the formal docs we signed saying, yes, we want this baby!) After they receive the dossier, they send it off for translation. This can take 1-4 weeks.

2. After the dossier has completed the translation process, our dossier and acceptance papers are then sent to the International Adoption Department (IAD) in Hanoi. After the IAD has received these papers, the Agency staff will follow up to make sure all documents and translations are satifactory, then a login date is set. (Possible travel could be any where from 3-6 mon of the login date)

3. After the IAD has set a log-in date, they will send a letter to the child's province requesting that the Local Justice Department being compling Dylan's legal documents (his dossier) It can take about a week for the letter to be received by the Local Justice Department. The process for compiling a child's dossier can take 30-40 business days or longer.

4. After the child's dossier has been compiled, then the Local Justice Department will forward Dylan's dossier to the IAD in Hanoi. Once the IAD receives Dylan's dossier, they will review his and our dossier. After they have completed the review process of both dossiers, they will then forward both back to Dylan's Local Justice Department in his province.

5. After the Local Justice Department receives our dossier and Dylan's dossier, a review of the dossiers will be completed. Once the review process is complete, the Local Justice Department will then forward both dossier's to the People's Committee. the People's Committee will review the dossiers. Once they are satisfied with all dossier docs, they will then set a date for the Giving and Receiving Ceremony.

6. We should have approx two weeks notice before we travel.

So that is why it takes so long! It is a lot of sending papers back and forth, requiring us to have a lot of patience! I will give it a shot.

Welcome to the travel wait!! I'm so happy for you that you are at this point. I'll be honest & say I think this is the hardest wait. Looking at that little picture & just wanting to go NOW! But I can assure you that day does come! My 5 year old reminds me of that each and every day. I hope you're having fun making preparations for your son...he is such a handsome little man. What a joyful addition! :)

The wait IS so hard, I know! I'm glad that you have a good grasp of the process, though. And thank God for a process that cuts down on corruption. You can sleep peacefully at night knowing that every step was taken to make this an ethical adoption. You will meet people in VN who didn't have to wait as long, and it really makes you wonder....! BUT, that doesn't diminish the hardship of the wait. Hang in there!
